DANNY CAREY PERFORMS “PNEUMA” IN CONCERT

Ranked as one of the 100 greatest drummers of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, Danny Carey’s drumming in the extremely popular band TOOL has set a standard for odd-meter time keeping and rhythmic complexity, while always creating just the right groove and feel for the song.

When we recorded Danny at Tool’s 2019 concert in Boston, we knew it was going to be a smash hit. How often can you get a multi-camera view of this amazing drumming during a live performance?  Turns out, not nearly as often as his millions of fans would like!  33 million video views (and counting) later, Danny’s video is (by far) at the top of our YouTube video stats month after month. If there were ever a perfect performance for our “Learn the Music” series with, THIS would be the obvious choice.

While we’re pretty sure (*huge understatement*) that Pneuma isn’t in 4/4 – most say that 33/8 is more likely – but notating it in in common time may create a much easier path to understanding the drum part for mere mortals. One way or another, we hope you enjoy our small contribution to breaking down one of the most complex musical performances in our extensive drumming library!
